Property tax exemption for seniors over 65 Madison County, AL.

Answer: Yes, Alabama offers very generous exemptions for seniors. At a minimum, all seniors over 65 are exempt from the state portion of property taxes. Based on your income, you may be eligible for exemptions that remove most or all of your remaining property tax liability.

A Major Benefit for Retirees

This is a huge benefit for retirees. The exemptions are tiered:

  • All seniors 65+ (regardless of income) are eligible for an exemption from the state portion of taxes (H4).
  • If your annual adjusted gross income is over $12,000, you are likely eligible for the H2 exemption, which also removes the first $5,000 of assessed value from county/city taxes.
  • If your annual federal taxable income is $12,000 or less, you are eligible for the H3 exemption, which makes you 100% exempt from all property taxes.

You must apply in person at the Tax Assessor's office and bring proof of age (like a driver's license) and proof of income (your most recent federal and state tax returns).
