What documents are needed for homestead exemption in Madison, AL?
Answer: You will need your recorded deed (or proof of filing) and a valid Alabama driver's license or Alabama ID card showing your new property address.
Proving Ownership and Occupancy
When you go to the Tax Assessor's office, you need to prove two things: that you own the property and that you live in it.
- Proof of Ownership: Your recorded deed is the best proof. This is the document you signed at closing. If you don't have the final recorded copy back yet, you can often use your settlement statement (HUD-1 or Closing Disclosure) as temporary proof.
- Proof of Occupancy: Your Alabama driver's license or state ID card with the new property address on it is the primary document they accept. This is why it's often best to get your driver's license updated first, then go file for your exemption.
