What happens if I file for homestead exemption late?

Answer: If you own the home on October 1st but fail to file by the December 31st deadline, you forfeit the exemption for that tax year. You cannot file late, and you must wait until the next filing period (the following October) to apply for the next tax year.

The Filing Window is Firm

The filing window is firm: October 1st to December 31st. If you miss this window, there is no appeal process to get the exemption applied retroactively for that year. You will be responsible for paying the full, non-exempted property tax bill.

This makes it a very costly deadline to miss, so we highly recommend getting your Alabama driver's license and filing for your exemption as soon as possible after you close (if you closed before Oct 1).
