The Madison City Schools Enrollment Survival Guide
Everything you need to enroll your child, in the order you need it, including the parts nobody warns you about until you are standing at the registrar's desk without them.
Get the Free GuideThree things that send Madison families home from the registrar's desk
Every one of these is avoidable. Every one of them costs families a wasted trip, a delayed start date, or worse. Here are three of them, free, before you decide whether you want the rest.
1. Your out of state immunization record will be rejected
Alabama does not accept the shot record from your current pediatrician, your old state's immunization registry, or a military shot record. Alabama requires its own Certificate of Immunization, the document everyone here still calls the blue card, and state law requires the transfer to happen before school entry. You cannot get one from your current state. The guide tells you exactly where to go and what to bring.
2. A Madison mailing address does not mean Madison City Schools
Four separate school systems operate in and around Madison, and their boundaries follow neither the post office nor the county line. Madison Preserve has Madison right there in the name and is not zoned to Madison City Schools. Builders name communities after the market they want to sell to, not the district that serves the land. The guide shows you the one public record that settles it in under a minute.
3. You do not have to wait until closing to enroll
If you are under contract or building, there is a specific district form that lets you enroll your child before you ever close. Most relocating families never hear about it and assume they have to wait. The guide names the form and tells you where it appears in the application.
That is three of them. The guide covers the rest.
2026-2027 is not a normal enrollment year
Madison City Schools rezoned the entire district for the 2026-2027 school year, timed to the opening of Russell Branch Elementary. Elementary boundaries moved and middle and high school populations were rebalanced. Any zoning information you find from a previous year, on a listing site, in an older blog post, or from a friend who moved here two years ago, may now be wrong. If you are moving in now, you get the new lines.
