What is the deadline for Alabama homestead exemption?

Answer: You must file for your homestead exemption between October 1st and December 31st after you purchase your home. You must own and occupy the home by October 1st to claim the exemption for the next tax year.

The October 1st Rule is Key

This is the most critical and often misunderstood part of the process. Alabama property taxes are paid "in arrears" (meaning you pay for the year that just passed). The tax year runs from October 1 to September 30.

To qualify for an exemption, you must own AND occupy your home on October 1st. You then have from that October 1st until December 31st to file your claim. If you buy your home after October 1st (e.g., in November), you cannot claim the exemption for that tax year; you must wait until the following October 1st to file.
